The Search for the Elusive Smallmouth Bass

I have been fishing now for 5 years. In those five years, I have heard many controversies on different websites over “which bass is the better fighter”. Nine times out of ten, the answer is “Smallmouth”.

Well, I had never been lucky enough to get to fish for smallmouth. Come to find out, it wasn’t that there weren’t any smallmouth bass creeks near me, it’s just that I was uneducated about the fact that they were there… until this spring. I, with the help of Celeste, caught a nice smallmouth bass on a worm. Definitely the biggest one for either of us.

This spring was a most wonderful fishing adventure. I caught so many different species of fish that I

Was walking on air for a couple of months. The summer heat has managed to put a damper on that,

Along with the fact that school is out for the kids and it seems my schedule has turned hectic with little

to no fishing time. BUT, I have managed to sneak out and fish and during those times, I have managed

to be introduced to smallmouth bass fishing. No record breaking fish, but in heart, these little guys have

got body size beat.

It amazes me how they fight. It’s like they have no clue as to how small they are compared to the bait that they are chasing. I fished in a local creek a few weeks ago and was catching smallie after smallie on an inline spinner. These fish, all ranging from 3 to 7 inches in length, would hit that lure like no tomorrow and literally fly out of the water; tail dancing and head shaking. Had they been on the 30-inch range, I’d have sworn that I was fighting a King Salmon!

I’ll tell ya, do not ever pass up an opportunity to go stream fishing for smallmouth bass. Even if the stream doesn’t produce lunkers, I believe that a great time is to be had. Besides the fact that you’re fishing, you also get to enjoy the serenity that comes with stream fishing. There isn’t too much that compares to it.

So now if I were asked… which bass is the better fighter, I’d have to say smallmouth bass. Now of course,

I am not going to shake a stick at largemouth bass fishing either. Geesh… I just want to fish, makes no difference to me WHAT I am fishing for, I just want to fish!
