Cabelas Reels !!!!!

Postby den720 » Sat Jun 28, 2008 1:42 pm

I have some info for you all considering buying cabela reels. If after the warranty something breaks or you need a part for their reels forget it. They offer no parts what so ever. If it 's in warranty period they replace reel. I have one of Mac's reels apart now and all it needs is a ratchet stop. probally a 7 dollar part. now he must buy a new reel. Dennis

Have you tried contacting the various manufacturers? Some of the Bass Pro reels look like they are made by Pfleuger. Maybe something similar may be the case with Cabelas.

Bob this a gear and can't get the proper tooth alinement with any other. It just really sucks that people pay good money to a large store like cabelas and they have all their reels made in Taiwan. But I just don't understand not making parts available. according to the rep. I spoke with this is fairly new policy. The thing with bass pro, browning and pfluger all are now made by same company. and I think it is pfluger. P.S. drop your reels off at harold's or stop by here.....Dennis

Dennis,

I feel your pain there, bud. Most of the reels that we see now, even some names I've been sworn to not disclose, are made out of the HaiWei Factory in China. Some of HaiWei's manufacturing is subbed out to a factory in Taiwan. All this is done to keep costs down.

Because the reel costs are so low, it does not pay for a company to tag, bag, catalog, and store replacement parts. It is actually cheaper for them to simply replace the reels during the warranty period.

What happens after the warranty period has expired? The company hopes that you will have a desire to get the latest and greatest, and not have reservations about buying a new reel. It's a shame, because for the most part, these reels could last for a lifetime. Perform general maintenance and tune-ups, and they'll last forever. However, we find ourselves forced to live in a disposable society. You think reels are whacked, look at the high-tech industry.

I don't know where I'm going with this so much as to say, "Thank You". What you have said in your posts, makes us aware that you are willing to do what you can for your customers, to save their reels. I wish the system would make it easier for you.

Peace,
James

Thank you James for the nice words. I try to do what ever it takes to make sure people are happy with my work. I have another reel of Mac's and it has taken me 3 weeks to get the parts, and countless computer time and phone calls. But I know he really likes this reel. And I love a challenge. He'll be so surprised that a reel from 1990 is spinning like butter. I know what you mean about these co. and the way they approach business. I have dealt with alot of them and here is what I think.

daiwa...very well made product, keep parts availble for a very long time even when reels discontinued

shimano..good product.....once a reel is discontinued so are parts

quatium..good reel great warranty will have reel back to you in 48 hrs of receiving it if in warranty period.24 hrs for saltwater reels lots of plastic parts

Pfeluger..good reel they now manufacture browning and bass pro reels. don't know how this will affect over all preformace of reels and customer service.

abu garcia..don't know to much about the new reels except that they are a tough one to work on.also I am not to sold on the drag systems on new reels 25 lbs of drag will make for alot of broken rods.

original abu garcia.. a work of art and can get parts if you look around.can also up date to a magnetic brake system.(if your the original owner they keep fixing them even if 40 yrs old)

Penn.....the best customer service I have ever dealt with and make a good product especially older saltwater reels

ardent ..This is a totally made in USA reel 3 yrs of warranty they still have some refinement to do to reels but are good also expensive.top of line baitcasting is 250.00

pinnacle reels are very good reel right up there with daiwa, shimano garcia....I have not had to get parts so dont know about customer service....The only thing I don't buy any fishing equipment or bait from wal-mart. It maybe a little more expensive but I get everything from Harold at sportmans hide-away here in town.also he has what you need almost all the time. Dennis...P.S. wal-mart stores are going to close their sporting goods depts. they have figured that there is more profit and faster turn over in clothes

Re: Cabelas Reels !!!!!

Postby canoeman » Sat Feb 06, 2010 8:40 pm

I've bought a casting reel and a spinning reel from Cabelas, and they both carry the Prodigy name that Cabelas gives to its line of fishing gear (rods and reels). If you look closely at the small print you can see that the Prodigy reels are made for Cabelas by Diawa Company. Diawa company doesn't retool in order to produce these reels for Cabelas. What I did, is to visit Diawa's web site, and look at the schematics of the different reels that look similar (almost exactly like) the Prodigy reels that I bought from Cabelas. On a hunch, I ordered the parts that I needed from the Diawa schematics, and bingo... they fit perfectly. The Prodigy line is pretty much pure Diawa, at a cheaper price because of the lack of the warranty. They change the name and make some cosmetic changes, but the guts don't change much. The trick is finding the right reel. I started with basic price range, and then the look of the reels in that price range, and then only looked at schematics of close matches. I hope this helps you avoid throwing away a really good reel.

Daiwa, not Diawa... I may be ugly, but at least I'm dislexic. I probably spelled that wrong too!
